As the first Strata-Title housing cooperative in Alberta, Riverwind successfully combines principles of cooperative housing with individual home ownership.
History
The concept was presented in 1989 by the project developers, The Communitas Group. The two tower, 19 story, was designed for 102 Homes. The West Tower was completed in 1989 and the East Tower in 1990. Subsequent renovations combined several Homes to a total of 97.
Considerable negotiation with city planning was required, but with strong community and prospective member support, the project was able to proceed with Gene Dub as the architect and Forest Contract Management as the general contractor. The buildings were noted for the high quality in design and unique features, including windows, doors and heating system.
To commemorate the opening, a 'time capsule' was placed by the elevator lobby in the West Tower.
